How Italian Pizza Came To The United States
When it comes to pizza matter there is no better people that serves
it with taste and delight but the Italian people. Italian pizzas are the
most popular and most sought after pizzas anywhere you go. They of
course originate in Italy but many have made its own version of Italian
pizza trying to copy their taste and serve them on restaurants. One of
these countries is the United States.
Italian pizza is said to be the most sought after pizza around the
world. United States have slowly overshadowing the Italian pizza when it
comes to pizza flavors. Find out how Italian pizza came to the American
soil. Below are some facts or information about Italian pizza:
- The earliest pizzeria was founded in Via Port’ Alba 18 in Naples
in 1830. It is still in pizza business until today. The most famous
pizzaiolo, the one making the pizzas, in Naples during this time is
Rafaele Esposito. He was called in by the King Umberto I and Queen
Mergherita of Savoy to prepare a local specialty for a meal. It is
widely believed that Esposito made the first known Italian pizza
with the color of Italian flag. He used tomato sauce to color the
dough red, mozzarella cheese for white and green basil leaves for
green. Later on, that pizza was called Mergherita Pizza, the first
known Italian pizza.
- Pizza came to know to the American consumers when an Italian
immigrant named Genarro Lombardi and its assistant Antonio Totonno
began making pizza to cater Italian immigrants. The first pizzeria
in the American soil was built in 1905. It became so popular that
demands for pizza began to grow. Later on, Totonno part ways with
Lombardi, started his own pizza business, and named his pizzeria “Totonnos”.
- During World War II, when American troops went to Italy, they
fell in love to Italy’s favorite pizza as fast time food. It has
become a popular soldier food that it reaches its popularity in the
mainstream American household.
- In 1950, pizza has become the component of American fast food
restaurants. It has become one of the favorite ordered foods among
fast food chain stores in the United States. It has reached its mark
in the US market. Two leading pizza stores in the United States were
born. One is Pizza Hut restaurant and the other one is Shakey’s.
Both provide a variety of pizza flavors that include even the
original Italian pizza flavor.

and toppings are now ready and available in the market. It has
